The Centipede Arcade Game is a throw back to the days when genres did not exist in the video game world. This game was one of the first to gain a female following among video game fans. That is interesting in light of the fact that Dona Bailey, an early pioneer of female programmers, was a co-designer along with Ed Logg. The game made its appearance in 1980. Today it is one of the most recognized arcade games in the world.
This vertically oriented- first-person shooter defends against swarms of insects. A round is completed after eliminating the centipede that winds downs towards the shooter.
Great peril confronts the mushroom
Great peril confronts the mushroom patch in the form of an insidious invasion of multiplying insects. Destroy the enraged creepers and stubborn obstacles or loose your enchanted fungus. With blasting segments duplicating new centipede heads, listen for the distinctive sounds of the attacking bugs. Complete a round after eliminating the centipede. But watch out. It won’t stay far away. The centipede winds down the field at you.
Millipede followed the Centipede Arcade Game
Millipede followed the Centipede Arcade Game in 1982. This descendent did not enjoy as much success as its predecessor. Atari Games include a version of Centipede in its 20th Anniversary edition release of Arcade Classics.
A variant of the game was made by Atari for the PC, PlayStaytion and Dreamcast platforms. This version is very different from the original with 3D graphics that allow the player freedom to move around the map. The original version is available with these updated graphics as well. Centipede Arcade action
Centipede Arcade action has been provided upon many platforms. Atari ported the game to their systems with the Atari’s 2600, 5200, 7800 and 8000 series. AtariSoft even created an application for the Apple II and the Commodore 64. Centipede is included in Microsoft Arcade. They put it in the Atari Anniversary Edition and the Atari 80 in 2001. It was made available for Xbox and PlayStation 2 as Atari Anthology in 2004. Centipede was also released in 2007 via Xbox Live Arcade. The sequel, Millipede, is available here as well.
